At the March meeting we got to see Jane's finished dress that she made at the Calamity Kim workshop.

As you may be able to tell, I was quite impressed, but unable to sneak off with it. Looks like the day was lots of fun.





Kim is leading us in her necklace workshop soon-can't wait.

MARCH MEETING

March's Meeting was filled with color and lively discussions. The group is in the planning stages of Logo Design, creating the theme for our upcoming fiber show in 2014 and what workshops, classes and projects are possible for next year!

FEBRUARY 2013 MEETING

We began our February meeting a little early in order to view Anita Mayer's new video. She is such a joy to watch even in a video format. If you scroll back in the blog, you will be able to see photos of the exciting class we recently had with her.

This month we had many new members and visitors attending and, as always, some beautiful pieces were shown.

Roseline shared a beautiful piece she created while on a retreat with artist Juanita Yeager

Patricia  brought her wonderful silk piece featuring cypress knees which has been traveling to art shows around the country.

Betty won FOUR BLUE RIBBONS at the Charlotte Country Fair for her amazing knitted work!!

Beaded Ball-Great Play Day

On February 9, a few Common Thread members got together for a great play day. Our own member and friend, Bonnie Johnson demonstrated her technique for creating her amazing beaded balls.

Bonnie supplied a variety of beads and most of the other equipment needed, but we also all added some of our own stash. As fiber artist we all seem to have large stashes of all kinds of bits and pieces of things.

Yes, it was very labor intensive, but also very fun. Can't wait to see the finished products!

MOSAIC FABRIC WORKSHOP

On January 21-23, members of Common Threads along with a few equally creative fiberholics, gathered together for the Anita Mayer MOSAIC FABRIC WORKSHOP. Most also attended the TALL TALES OF TRAVEL lecture Monday evening where Anita talked about her love of traveling to exotic places to explore the native handwork that inspires her so.

 

The first step in making our fabric was to paint organza with a layer of net on top. The colors each participant chose inspired further development of each unique piece.

We then selected a variety of complimentary fabrics which we cut into small squares, meshing them between the organza and the net and continued with quilting and embellishment.

The variety of the finished pieces was astounding and all participants seemed extremely pleased to have spent three wonderful days soaking up the creativity and philosophy of the very wise and talented Anita Mayer. This was Anita's second year with us and I already hear whispers for more.

FIRST MEETING OF 2013!

On January 8, Common Threads held the first meeting of 2013.   Many of our snow bird members are back for the season, and it is good to see everyone excited and ready to become involved.  Several members brought wonderful fiber creations to share.

Congratulations was extended to Linda Wein and her committee for the great job on the Fiber Fascination show. We are on the Visual Art Center's calendar for another fiber show in December 2014.

The Anita Mayer workshop is coming up on January 21-23 and her lecture on her amazing travels is Monday evening the 21st  from 5-6 PM.  The general public is invited to attend the lecture for $10, exclusive of the workshop.  Many other workshops and play dates are being scheduled, so look for more information to come.

Member Mary Jollett is showing three mermaid dolls at Valentinas in Punta Gorda. If you get a chance stop by and see them in person.

This new year seems like it's going to be a good one- even the weather is better than ever. Many of our members are doing really fantastic things and we will have much information to share.

FIBER FASCINATION: FIBER AS ART

On December 6, Common Threads "officially" opened the FIBER FASCINATION: FIBER AS ART exhibit with a wonderful reception. All who attended had a great time even though we missed one of our favorites, who was nursing a broken wrist.

The committee did a spectacular job and we sincerely thank them all.

Linda put together a wonderful bio book with a very creative cover by Jane-LOVE IT!

All we can say is" YOU HAVE TO SEE IT FOR YOURSELF. The exhibit can be seen until December 27th. at the Visual Art Center. Congratulations to all our Fabulous and Truly Fascinating Fiber Artists.

COMMON THREADS NOVEMBER MEETING

On November 13, we held an exciting meeting, celebrating the completion of the first phase of our FIBER FASCINATION : FIBER AS ART show. Members submitted their work earlier in the day and the pieces were judged by Ruth Holm, a fiber artist living in Sarasota, Florida.

Many members wore flowery Monet hats made by member Judy Rehill.

Linda explained the judging and handed out the judges comments to members who wanted them. VERY GOOD FEEDBACK!

We welcomed new members-who had some very wonderful additions to our show and we gave out great raffle prizes.

If we want to see more we have to wait until the show begins! FIBER-FASCINATION: FIBER AS ART begins December 3 - December 28, 2012 in the Goff Gallery at the VAC.

Rhapsody on a Theme

Common Threads member Patricia Turner announced that her piece "Rhapsody on a Theme" was recently purchased by Edison College for their permanent collection in the Keystone Gallery. The piece will be unveiled on November 8, in the Edison auditorium. The unveiling will be held in conjunction with a ceremony honoring Maestra Janita Hauk, the symphony conductor of 17 years, who passed away this summer.  You can view Patricia's silk fiber piece after November 9 in the Keystone Gallery.

GREAT PLAY DAY

On Saturday, October 27 Common Threads hosted a fun and flowery play day with Kim Sherrod aka Calamity Kim!
